Fingering Exercises & Techniques

1    2    3    4    5

Finger Strength and Dexterity are essential to good playing. You must have the strength to press the strings, and the dexterity to change fingering, move to another string, and move up or down the neck smoothly and effortlessly. Developing finger muscle and dexterity is indepent of learning a particular song...it is needed before you can learn a song. Most players get frustrated trying to learn a song, not because the song is hard, but because they are trying to develop the neccesary dexterity and strength after they learn the song.

Coordination between your left hand and right hand is essential for clean playing. This becomes more important as the speed of your playing increases. To play well, you must fret the note with your left hand, and pick the string at exactly the same moment with your right hand. Good playing requires precise timing.
