Fingering Exercises & TechniquesWhy I recommend fingering exersisesWhat is the difference between an advanced player that is capable of playing fast, clean, complex melodies, and a beginner who has trouble switching chords? The main difference is that the advanced player has trained his mind and fingers so that he doesn't have to think about where his fingers should go...the process is automatic. The key to advanced playing is to develop Muscle Memory. Muscle memory is when your mind contains "packages" of fingering routines that can be recalled and used without conscious thought. This is created through concentrated repetition. For example, by playing the chords C, F and G over and over, you'll reach a point where playing the chords is automatic...you don't have to think about where to put your fingers. A "C" chord is stored in your memory as a package of muscle instructions. |
